EDITORS COMMENTS
Step back in time to the charming village of Wootton Rivers, Wiltshire, with this photograph from Historic England's archives. Taken by Katherine MacFee in the 1920s, this print captures the idyllic scene of a thatched cottage surrounded by a lush garden and meandering path. The warm sunlight casts a golden glow on the rustic stone walls and vibrant flowers, creating a sense of serenity and tranquility.
But look closely at the top left corner of the image and you'll notice something intriguing - figures in a crow's nest with a flag! It seems that sailor semaphore was also captured on film during this photo shoot. This delightful discovery adds an extra layer of charm to an already enchanting scene.
This photograph is not only a beautiful representation of rural English life but also provides insight into the photographer's creative eye for detail. Katherine MacFee's work has been preserved by Historic England, allowing us to appreciate these moments in time for generations to come.
