EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a scene from May, 1412-1416, as depicted by the talented artist Paul Limbourg. Lords and ladies adorned in vibrant green garments are mounted on horses, progressing along a road surrounded by enchanting woods. Preceded by trumpeters announcing their arrival, they partake in a grand procession to celebrate the joli mois de mai. At the top of the image, two zodiacal signs for May - Taurus and Gemini - symbolize the astrological significance of this month. This exquisite artwork is taken from Les Tres Riches Heures du Duc de Berry, an extraordinary book of hours commissioned for Jean, Duke of Berry. Considered one of Europe's most exceptional examples of manuscript illumination, this masterpiece showcases not only religious devotion but also elements of nature and fashion prevalent during that era. The meticulous attention to detail highlights every aspect: from the majestic forest backdrop to the musicians playing their trumpets with utmost precision. The print transports us back to medieval France when pageants were held in honor of important occasions like May Day celebrations. It offers a glimpse into the lives and traditions cherished by nobility during this period. With its rich colors and intricate design, this photograph allows us to appreciate both artistic excellence and historical context. It serves as a testament to the skillful craftsmanship employed by Hermann Limbourg, Jean Limbourg, and Paul Limbourg – artists who contributed their talents to create this remarkable piece under Duke Jean's patronage at Chantilly's Musee Condee.
