The Campo Santo, or Cemetery, Pisa, 1860. Creator: Macquaid

The Campo Santo, or Cemetery, Pisa, 1860. This famous cemetery was founded by Archbishop Ubaldo, at the end of the twelfth century, who, on his expulsion from Palestine by Saladin, took...a quantity of earth from Mount Calvary. This earth was said to have the peculiar property of reducing to dust in twenty-four hours bodies buried therein. He purchased the site of the present building, and there deposited the earth, but the structure was not commenced till 1278...[There is] an arcade or cloister running all round the interior...As will be remarked, the tracery of the arches of the cloister is Gothic. This portion was not completed till the latter part of the fifteenth century...In the floor of the ambulatory are numerous slab tombs of ancient Pisan families: they are in low relief, and in many instances are nearly obliterated by the footsteps of succeeding generations...The Campo Santo is, perhaps, most remarkable for the frescoes with which its walls are covered...[These are] chiefly by Giotto, Orcagna, Benozzo Gozzoli, and Meunni...Neglect, decay, and restorations have done their usual work upon them; but still enough remains that is very valuable and interesting. They are chiefly in two ranges, one above the other'. From "Illustrated London News", 1860

EDITORS COMMENTS
The Campo Santo, or Cemetery, of Pisa, Italy, as depicted in this photograph taken by Macquaid in 1860, is a historical and artistic marvel. Founded by Archbishop Ubaldo in the late twelfth century, this cemetery was believed to hold earth from Mount Calvary, which was said to hasten the decomposition of the buried bodies. The site was purchased, and construction began in 1278, resulting in an architectural masterpiece that includes an arcade or cloister that encircles the interior. The tracery of the arches showcases Gothic influences, with the completion of this portion occurring in the late fifteenth century. The floor of the ambulatory is adorned with numerous slab tombs of ancient Pisan families. These tombs, in low relief, have been nearly obliterated by the footsteps of generations that have passed. The Campo Santo is most renowned for the frescoes that cover its walls, primarily the works of Giotto, Orcagna, Benozzo Gozzoli, and Meunni. Over time, neglect, decay, and restorations have affected these valuable and interesting works. They are primarily located in two ranges, one above the other. This photograph captures the essence of the Campo Santo's historical significance and artistic beauty, offering a glimpse into the rich heritage of Pisa's past. Macquaid's lens masterfully preserves the intricate details of the architecture and the subtle nuances of the frescoes, providing a visual testament to the enduring allure of this remarkable place.
