EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait captures Surgeon John Henry Sylvester, a distinguished member of the 11th Bengal Cavalry (Probyns Horse), during his time of service in colonial India. Painted by Colin Hunter in 1885, the oil on canvas print showcases Sylvester as a younger man, exuding an air of authority and confidence. Sylvester's impressive career began after he studied Anatomy at the Royal College of Surgeons. He served with great distinction in various military campaigns, including the Persian Campaign (1857), Indian Mutiny (1857-1859), and Umbeyla Campaign (1863-1864). During his time with Probyns Horse, he was attached to this renowned cavalry unit known for its bravery and skill. The painting portrays Sylvester standing tall in his British Raj uniform, adorned with a turban that adds an exotic touch to his appearance. His prominent mutton chops frame a face that reflects both strength and compassion—a testament to his role as a dedicated medic serving soldiers on the frontlines. This remarkable piece not only immortalizes Sylvester but also pays homage to the imperial era of British rule in India. It serves as a reminder of the significant contributions made by individuals like him who played vital roles within colonial society. Displayed at London's National Army Museum, this portrait offers viewers a glimpse into Victorian-era military life while honoring one man's commitment to duty and service.
