Mexican redknee tarantula Featured Image

Mexican redknee tarantula

Mexican redknee tarantula (Brachypelma smithi). This large nocturnal spider lives in the forests and deserts of Central America, preying on insects and other arthropods. It has a leg span of up to 18 centimetres and can shed its eponymous red bristles when threatened. These cause irritation and discomfort. It generally waits to ambush its prey, before killing it with a venom which both paralyses it and begins the digestion process. After mating, the female will often try to eat the male
