Mexican redknee tarantula (Brachypelma smithi). This large nocturnal spider lives in the forests and deserts of Central America, preying on insects and other arthropods. It has a leg span of up to 18 centimetres and can shed its eponymous red bristles when threatened. These cause irritation and discomfort.
