Emperor penguin chick (Aptenodytes forsteri), Snow Hill Island, Weddell Sea
Emperor penguin chick (Aptenodytes forsteri), Snow Hill Island, Weddell Sea, Antarctica, Polar Regions The Emperor Penguin (Aptenodytes forsteri) is the tallest and heaviest of all living penguin species. It is the only penguin that breeds during the winter in Antarctica. Emperor Penguins eat mainly crustaceans (such as krill) but also occasionally indulge in small fish and squid. In the wild, Emperor Penguins typically live for 20 years, but some records indicate a maximum lifespan of around 40 years. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the adorable sight of an Emperor penguin chick, found on Snow Hill Island in the Weddell Sea, Antarctica. Aptenodytes forsteri, as it is scientifically known, is not only the tallest but also the heaviest among all living penguin species. What makes this particular penguin unique is its ability to breed during the harsh winter months in Antarctica. Emperor Penguins primarily feed on crustaceans like krill, occasionally indulging in small fish and squid. In their natural habitat, these magnificent creatures have an average lifespan of 20 years; however, some records suggest they can live up to 40 years. It's important not to mistake them for their closely related counterparts such as King Penguins or Royal Penguins. This photograph showcases a full-length view of a young Emperor Penguin chick sitting outside amidst nature's beauty. The image portrays a sense of security and friendship between two animals while highlighting their need for protection from extreme cold temperatures. The frozen landscape serves as a stark backdrop against which this little creature finds warmth and comfort with its mother nearby. The bond between them exemplifies trust and togetherness in this isolated environment. Photographer Thorsten Milse has masterfully captured this heartwarming moment that perfectly encapsulates the wonders of wildlife photography at its finest.
