EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, taken by Jack Delano in January 1943, transports us back to the bustling Waiting Room of Union Station in Chicago. The image captures a significant moment in history when people were traveling during World War II. The architecture of the station is beautifully highlighted by the interplay between light and shadows, creating a dramatic mood that adds depth to the scene. Silhouettes of a diverse group of individuals can be seen against the backdrop of sunlight streaming through large windows. These silhouettes evoke a sense of anticipation and eagerness as they wait for their trains, each with their own stories and destinations. The signs scattered throughout the room indicate various amenities available at Union Station, including references to USO (United Service Organizations), which played an important role in supporting servicemen during wartime. This detail reminds us of the historical context surrounding this photograph. Delano's expert composition captures not only a moment frozen in time but also reflects his skillful use of retro-style photography techniques prevalent during that era. This archival image serves as a window into our past, allowing us to appreciate both its aesthetic appeal and its significance as part of our collective history. Overall, this print from Circa Images provides viewers with an intimate glimpse into life at Union Station during one particular day in 1943 – an evocative reminder of how travel has shaped our world throughout the 20th century.
