EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from June 1941 showcases the remarkable story of Freda Jones, a trailblazing young lady who defied societal norms during the Second World War. In an era dominated by men, Freda shattered glass ceilings as she assumed the role of GWR Stationmaster at Pontdolgoch in mid Wales. Situated on the scenic Welshpool to Aberystwyth line, this one-man station became her domain. Freda's responsibilities extended far beyond mere train greetings; she seamlessly juggled ticket issuance, parcel collection, and meticulous bookkeeping. Her dedication and competence were evident as she efficiently managed all aspects of station operations with finesse. Before her groundbreaking appointment as a stationmaster, Freda worked as a girl clerk in a warehouse—a testament to her determination to break free from traditional gender roles. Hailing from Newtown, where she resided with her parents, Freda fearlessly embraced this challenging position amidst the backdrop of wartime uncertainty. This image not only captures Freda's unwavering spirit but also serves as an emblem for women's empowerment and resilience during tumultuous times. It stands as a reminder that even in male-dominated industries like transportation and railway management, women like Freda made invaluable contributions that shaped history. Preserved by STEAM Museum of the GWR (Great Western Railway), this photograph immortalizes an extraordinary woman whose legacy continues to inspire generations today.
