1902 Wright Brothers Glider Tests

Historic photo of the Wright brothers third test glider being launched at Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina, on October 10, 1902. Wilbur Wright is at the controls, Orville Wright is at left, and Dan Tate (a local resident and friend of the Wright brothers) is at right.
The 1902 test gliders were extremely important to the development of the first powered airplane. The new glider design was based on the wind tunnel tests performed by the Wrights in 1901. The improvements to the glider included a new rudder that helped provide three-dimensional control of the aircraft

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in aviation history - the 1902 Wright Brothers Glider Tests. Taken at Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina, on October 10th, 1902, this historic image showcases the third test glider being launched into the skies. At the controls is Wilbur Wright himself, while his brother Orville stands to his left and Dan Tate, a local resident and friend of the Wright brothers, stands to his right. These tests were pivotal in paving the way for the development of powered flight. The design of this glider was based on meticulous wind tunnel experiments conducted by the ingenious duo in 1901. Notable improvements included a newly designed rudder that granted three-dimensional control over the aircraft. In this frozen moment captured by Space Images (not affiliated with any commercial entity), we witness not only a group of determined pioneers but also their unwavering dedication to pushing boundaries and defying gravity. Little did they know that their relentless pursuit would eventually lead them to achieve what was once deemed impossible - human flight. The significance of this photograph lies not just in its depiction of an awe-inspiring feat but also as a testament to human ingenuity and perseverance. It serves as a reminder that dreams can indeed take flight when fueled by passion and unyielding determination.
