Framed Print of Deep-Sea Swallower

One of the fishes falling into the Swallower assemblage (family Chiasmodontidae), this species of Pseudoscopelus has an impressive collection of photophores on its head and on its ventral surface. These bioluminescent structures may be used to signal conspecific (same species) fishes or to attract prey items. The common name for the group comes from the fact that these fishes have expandable stomachs. They can eat prey items larger than they are. These fishes can be difficult to photograph owing to their deep brown coloration - thus the use of a white box. The fish was trawled from 1, 500 meters depth, Gulf of Mexico, 2019.
