Winters bark (Drimys winteri) pollen, SEM

Winters bark pollen. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of winters bark Drimys winteri pollen. The pollen is found in associations of 4 grains, known as tetrads. The outer wall (exine) of the grain comprises rod- like processes (bacula), fused at their tips, forming a network of ridges (muri) and surrounding a circular germinal pore. When the pollen, containing male gametes, lands on the stigma of a flower, it germinates. A pollen tube grows out of a pore, down the stigma, to the ovary. Male nuclei pass down the tube and fertilize the ovules to form seeds. Winters bark is a flowering shrub native to South America. Magnification: x1380 when printed 10cm high

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of Winters bark (Drimys winteri) pollen. Taken using a scanning electron microscope, the image reveals a close-up view of the pollen grains in stunning detail. The pollen is arranged in groups of four grains, known as tetrads, and each grain possesses a unique outer wall structure. The outer wall, or exine, consists of rod-like processes called bacula that are fused at their tips to form an intricate network of ridges known as muri. Within this elaborate framework lies a circular germinal pore. This specialized design plays a crucial role in the reproductive process of Winters bark. When these pollen grains land on the stigma of a flower, they germinate and produce a tube that extends down through the stigma towards the ovary. Male nuclei travel down this tube and fertilize ovules within the ovary to initiate seed formation. Winters bark is an enchanting flowering shrub native to South America. Its delicate flowers rely on this remarkable mechanism for successful reproduction. With its vibrant colors and fascinating structures, this SEM image offers us a glimpse into nature's ingenious ways of ensuring plant survival. Printed at 10cm high with x1380 magnification, this photograph from Science Photo Library serves as both an artistic marvel and valuable scientific resource for botany enthusiasts and researchers alike
