Tower of Babel, 17th-century artwork C016 / 8933

Tower of Babel. 17th-century artwork of the construction of the Tower of Babel. As told in the Book of Genesis in the Judaeo-Christian bible, this tower was built in Babylon on the Shinar plain by descendants of Noah. The tower, built to reach heaven, angered God who destroyed it. As punishment, the builders were scattered and instead of one language there were now many. The story, possibly inspired by the fall of the famous temple tower of Etemenanki, was used to explain the ethnic diversity of the worlds population. Artwork (1670, artist names at lower right) from Turris Babel (1679) by German Jesuit scholar Athanasius Kircher (circa 1601-1680)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This 17th-century artwork, titled "Tower of Babel" depicts the legendary construction of the tower as described in the Book of Genesis. Created by German Jesuit scholar Athanasius Kircher around 1670, this monochrome print showcases an architectural marvel that once stood on the Shinar plain in Babylon. The tower was built by descendants of Noah with a grand ambition to reach heaven, but their audacity angered God who ultimately destroyed it. The Tower of Babel serves as a powerful metaphor for humanity's desire to challenge divine authority and achieve greatness. As punishment for their hubris, God scattered the builders across different lands and bestowed upon them various languages, leading to ethnic diversity among mankind. Kircher's artwork draws inspiration from both biblical accounts and historical events such as the fall of Etemenanki temple tower. With intricate details and skillful craftsmanship, he brings this ancient tale to life, evoking a sense of awe and wonder. This print not only captures a pivotal moment in religious history but also reflects Kircher's deep interest in archaeology and mythology. It stands as a testament to his scholarly pursuits during the 17th century when Europe was fascinated by classical antiquity. Displayed here is just one piece from Turris Babel (1679), Kircher's comprehensive work exploring various aspects surrounding the Tower of Babel story. This remarkable artwork provides us with insights into both human ambition and divine intervention while reminding us of our shared origins amidst diverse cultures across Asia, Middle East, Europe, and beyond.
