Sunburnt skin

Sunburnt skin. Coloured electron micrograph (SEM) of epidermal skin cells after sunburn. These stratified epithelial cells have been destroyed by ultraviolet (UV) light in the suns ray and are sloughing off. UV radiation also damages the tiny blood vessels beneath the epidermis. Sunburn is most common in fair-skinned people, whose skin lacks the protective pigment melanin. Repeated exposure prematurely ages the skin and increases the risk of skin cancer. Calamine lotion and painkillers help to soothe sunburnt skin. Magnification: x320 at 6x7cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the aftermath of a sunburn on human skin. The coloured electron micrograph showcases the destructive effects of ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun's rays on our epidermal cells. These stratified epithelial cells, seen in vibrant detail, have been damaged to the point of sloughing off. The detrimental impact of UV radiation extends beyond just these surface cells; it also harms the delicate blood vessels beneath the epidermis. Sunburns are particularly common among fair-skinned individuals who lack sufficient melanin, a protective pigment found in darker skin tones. Repeated exposure to sunlight not only prematurely ages our skin but also heightens the risk of developing skin cancer. However, relief can be found through remedies such as calamine lotion and painkillers that help soothe sunburnt skin. At a magnification level of x320 and measuring 6x7cm, this scanning electron micrograph provides an intricate view into both the beauty and fragility of our largest organ - our skin. It serves as a reminder to protect ourselves from harmful UV rays by practicing safe sun habits and utilizing appropriate skincare measures. This remarkable image is brought to you by Science Photo Library, showcasing their dedication to capturing fascinating scientific visuals for educational purposes across various fields including healthcare and medicine.
