Stratocumulus cloud line over E. Pacific

Frontal stratocumulus clouds over the Pacific Ocean. The clouds delineate the boundary of a mass of warm air (top left) that has come from the Californian coast some 580km away. Usually, the clouds form just off the coast. In this instance, however, the continental Santa Ana winds have blown the warm air much farther over the Ocean before the clouds have formed. This photograph was taken by the crew of Shuttle Atlantis during the STS-44 Mission of 24 November - 1 December 1991

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a mesmerizing sight of stratocumulus clouds stretching across the expansive East Pacific Ocean. The cloud line elegantly delineates the boundary of a mass of warm air, originating from the Californian coast approximately 580 kilometers away. Typically, these clouds form just off the coast, but in this extraordinary instance, the continental Santa Ana winds have carried the warm air much farther over the ocean before their formation. Taken by the skilled crew aboard Shuttle Atlantis during their STS-44 Mission between November 24th and December 1st in 1991, this image offers a unique perspective on our planet's weather patterns. It serves as a testament to both nature's beauty and its intricate interplay with climate systems. The stratocumulus cloud type is renowned for its low altitude and distinct layered appearance. Its presence here not only adds an ethereal touch to Earth's atmosphere but also provides valuable insights into meteorology and cloud dynamics. As we gaze upon this photograph captured from space, let us appreciate how it reminds us of our planet's interconnectedness and delicate balance. It invites contemplation about how even seemingly small shifts in wind patterns can shape weather phenomena on such grand scales. Science Photo Library has once again delivered an awe-inspiring visual that sparks curiosity about our world's natural wonders while highlighting humanity's continuous quest for knowledge in understanding them better.
