Starfish and abalone, X-ray

Starfish and abalone. Coloured X-ray of a starfish (class Asteroidea) and an abalone (Haliotis sp.). A starfish typically has 5 arms radiating outward from a central disc. Tube feet (not seen) located on the undersides of the arms are used for movement. A starfish does not have a brain. Instead, coordination is controlled by one or more rings of centrally-located nerves. An abalone is a mollusc, related to limpets and snails. Its flat shell contains a row of holes, through which inhaled sea water is expelled after respiration is complete. Several species of abalone are edible and are an important food source

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of marine life in all its glory. The X-ray image captures a starfish and an abalone, providing us with a unique perspective into their fascinating anatomy. The starfish, belonging to the class Asteroidea, exhibits its characteristic five arms radiating outward from a central disc. Although not visible in this X-ray, tube feet located on the undersides of these arms enable the starfish's graceful movement through water. Surprisingly, unlike most creatures, a starfish lacks a brain for coordination; instead, it relies on one or more rings of centrally-located nerves. Accompanying the starfish is an abalone, a mollusc closely related to limpets and snails. Its flat shell features a row of holes that facilitate respiration by expelling sea water after inhalation. Notably, several species of abalone are not only visually stunning but also serve as an important food source. Through this vibrant and detailed image captured by Science Photo Library's expertise in radiography, we gain insight into both the delicate structure and extraordinary diversity found within our oceans' depths. This photograph invites us to marvel at nature's wonders while appreciating the interconnectedness between different species inhabiting our aquatic ecosystems.
