Computer-enhanced Apollo 4 view of crescent Earth

Crescent Earth. Computer-enhanced view of the Earth as taken from the Apollo 4 spacecraft, in orbit 17, 960 kilometres above the surface. The large amount of cloud cover makes it difficult to identify any surface features on the sunlit side. Apollo 4 was an unmanned test of the Apollo/Saturn V launcher combination. It was launched on 9 November 1967 into a low orbit. The third stage was then used to climb to over 18, 000 kilometers before heading back to Earth. The speed at re-entry was similar to that expected for Apollo flights returning from the Moon. This test validated the design of the crew capsule. The splashdown of Apollo 4 was on 9 November 1967

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures a computer-enhanced view of our beloved planet, Earth. Taken from the Apollo 4 spacecraft during its orbit 17,960 kilometers above the surface, this image showcases a mesmerizing crescent Earth. However, due to an extensive amount of cloud cover on the sunlit side, it becomes challenging to identify any distinct surface features. Apollo 4 was an unmanned test mission that aimed to validate the design of the crew capsule and assess the performance of the Apollo/Saturn V launcher combination. Launched on November 9th, 1967 into a low orbit, this spacecraft's third stage propelled it over an astonishing altitude of 18,000 kilometers before returning back to Earth. The re-entry speed closely resembled what would be expected for future Apollo flights returning from their lunar missions. The significance of this test cannot be understated as it paved the way for subsequent manned missions by ensuring that crucial aspects such as crew safety were thoroughly validated. This awe-inspiring photograph serves as a reminder of humanity's relentless pursuit in exploring and understanding our home planet and beyond. Captured by Science Photo Library and not intended for commercial use, this breathtaking image allows us to marvel at Earth's beauty while appreciating the scientific achievements that have brought us closer to unraveling its mysteries.
