Outer solar system formation

Outer solar system formation. Artwork showing the formation of the unusual orbits of bodies in the outer solar system. The inset shows three stages in the formation of the solar system. Early on (top) it is a disc of small bodies (planetesimals), which collide and accrete into gradually larger bodies. These accrete smaller ones until their orbital paths are nearly clear of debris (middle), but some large bodies do remain, and collisions (orange) still occur. Some smaller bodies are thrown out of the solar system by the gravity of larger bodies (lower right of middle stage). The result (bottom) is that some bodies, such as the dwarf planet Pluto, have highly eccentric orbits (yellow lines)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork showcases the mesmerizing formation of the outer solar system, shedding light on the intriguing orbits of celestial bodies. The main image depicts a visual representation of this phenomenon, where unusual orbits take shape amidst a vast expanse of space. Inset within the print are three stages that illustrate how our solar system came into existence. At its earliest stage, the top inset reveals a disc composed of countless planetesimals - small bodies that gradually collide and merge to form larger entities. As time progresses (middle inset), these growing bodies continue to accrete smaller ones until their orbital paths become relatively clear from debris. However, remnants of large bodies persist while collisions still occur sporadically. The lower right portion exhibits an enthralling occurrence: some smaller bodies are expelled from our solar system due to the gravitational forces exerted by their larger counterparts. This intricate interplay between gravity and mass shapes the final outcome (bottom), leading to highly eccentric orbits for certain celestial objects like Pluto, depicted by vibrant yellow lines. Through this remarkable illustration, we gain insight into the complex dynamics governing planetary formation in cold outer regions. It serves as a testament to humanity's continuous quest for knowledge about our cosmic surroundings and underscores how art can beautifully convey scientific concepts with clarity and creativity.
