Optical pattern

Optical pattern. Computer model of patterns formed by bending a coloured transparent sheet. The flat structure is distorted, as seen by the distortion of the gridlines. Viewing the distortion from this angle shows areas of overlap (darker) and actual fold lines. The colours have also been modified to reflect the distortion of the sheet. This pattern is an example of caustics, the patterns arising when overlap is observed. This model was created as an artwork by Professor Eric Heller

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an optical pattern that mesmerizes the viewer with its intricate design. Created by Professor Eric Heller, a renowned physicist and artist, this computer-generated model explores the fascinating phenomenon of caustics – patterns that emerge when overlapping occurs. The image features a colored transparent sheet bent in various directions, resulting in a visually striking distortion of the flat structure. As we observe from this angle, darker areas indicate points of overlap while actual fold lines become apparent. The colors themselves have been modified to reflect the sheet's distortion, enhancing its artistic appeal. Through meticulous simulation and mathematical modeling, Professor Heller has successfully captured the essence of refraction and light manipulation within this artwork. The combination of his expertise in both physics and art allows for a seamless integration of scientific concepts into visual representation. This abstract illustration not only exemplifies Professor Heller's innovative research but also serves as a testament to the boundless possibilities at the intersection of science and creativity. By delving into optics and exploring how light behaves under different conditions, he invites us to contemplate the beauty hidden within natural phenomena. As we admire this thought-provoking piece, it becomes evident that art can transcend traditional boundaries by offering new perspectives on our physical world. This extraordinary collaboration between mathematics, physics, and artistic expression leaves us captivated by its vibrant colors, simulated textures, and profound insights into caustics' enigmatic nature.
