Optical image of the Pleiades star cluste

Pleiades star cluster. True-colour optical image of the Pleiades open star cluster (M45, NGC 1432). This cluster is about 30 light years wide, and lies 400 light years away in the constellation Taurus. The brightest stars are embedded within streaky reflection nebulae, wisps of cold gas and dust which reflect the light of the stars. These are thought to be the remnants of the gas cloud from which the stars formed. The cluster is also known as the Seven Sisters, although most people can only see six stars with the naked eye. It actually contains around 500 stars. This image was produced by digitally combining photographs taken by the UK Schmidt Telescope in blue and red light

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of the Pleiades star cluster, also known as M45 or NGC 1432. Located approximately 400 light years away in the constellation Taurus, this open star cluster spans an impressive width of about 30 light years. The true-colour optical image reveals a stunning sight where the brightest stars are nestled within streaky reflection nebulae. These ethereal wisps consist of cold gas and dust particles that reflect the radiant light emitted by these celestial bodies. Scientists believe that these nebulae are remnants from the original gas cloud which birthed these stars. Often referred to as the Seven Sisters, it is interesting to note that only six stars can be observed with the naked eye by most people. However, this magnificent cluster actually contains around 500 individual stars. This breathtaking image was meticulously created by digitally combining photographs taken using both blue and red light filters from the renowned UK Schmidt Telescope. The result is a visually striking representation that highlights not only the stellar brilliance but also provides insight into our vast universe's wonders. Presented by Science Photo Library, this awe-inspiring print transports viewers into a realm where science meets artistry, reminding us of how small we truly are amidst such grandeur.
