EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the traditional method of mud brick production in Sudan. The image showcases a vast expanse of mud bricks laid out under the scorching sun, as they dry before being fired. Located in Wau, Warrap, Bahr el-Ghazal, this production area is a testament to the industrious nature of the Sudanese people. Taken during work for Humanitarian Aid Relief Trust (HART), an esteemed charity focused on supporting education in the region, this photograph beautifully juxtaposes ancient techniques with modern philanthropy. It highlights how even in today's 21st century world, there are still communities relying on age-old practices to meet their basic needs. The sight of individuals laboring outdoors amidst stacks of drying mud bricks evokes a sense of admiration for their resilience and resourcefulness. This snapshot transports us to a developing country where technology may be limited but ingenuity thrives. Matthew Oldfield's lens expertly captures not only the physicality involved in baking these essential building materials but also tells a story about Africa's rich cultural heritage. The image serves as a reminder that progress can take many forms and that organizations like HART play an invaluable role in empowering communities through non-governmental means. In summary, this powerful print encapsulates both tradition and humanitarian efforts while shedding light on the remarkable people behind Sudan's mud brick industry.
