Mosquito. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the head of a male mosquito (Culex pipiens). Its large compound eyes are seen at lower right. Its feathery antennae protrude from between them. Male mosquitos antennae are bushier than those of the females as they are used to detect mates by the precise frequency of their wingbeats. Its sensory palps stretch from upper left to lower right, with its proboscis beneath them. Mosquitoes feed using this proboscis, but only the female mosquitoes feed on blood, the males feeding on plant juices such as nectar. Magnification: x14 at 5x7cm size
