LM of rhino horn

Polarised light micrograph of a cross-section of horn from the Indian rhinoceros. The horn consists throughout of keratin, and does not have a bony pith (unlike those of cattle). It is commonly held that rhinoceros horn consists of matted hair. Seen under a microscope, however, it is clear that the individual rods are not coated with a protective layer as is real hair. They adhere densely together in layers, thus they resemble neither the hair nor the horn of a ruminant, but rather the material of the hoof. A mistaken belief in the aphrodisiac properties of the powdered horn has led to all species of rhinoceros being hunted close to extinction. Mag: x100 at 35mm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of a cross-section of a rhinoceros horn, specifically from the Indian rhinoceros. Under polarised light micrography, it becomes evident that this remarkable appendage is composed entirely of keratin, devoid of any bony pith commonly found in cattle horns. Contrary to popular belief associating rhino horn with matted hair, a closer examination reveals that each individual rod lacks the protective coating characteristic of real hair. Instead, these rods densely adhere together in layers resembling neither ruminant hair nor traditional horn structures but rather mirroring the material found in hooves. Unfortunately, due to an erroneous belief in its aphrodisiac properties when powdered, all species of rhinoceros have faced relentless hunting and are now perilously close to extinction. The significance of this image lies not only in its scientific value but also as a poignant reminder of humanity's impact on wildlife populations. As we marvel at the intricacies within this photograph - magnified 100 times at a 35mm size - we are compelled to reflect upon our responsibility towards preserving these magnificent creatures and their habitats for future generations. Captured by Science Photo Library and free from any commercial association or intent, this thought-provoking print serves as both an educational tool and a call to action against the illegal trade driven by misguided beliefs surrounding rhino horns' mythical powers.
