EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the ingenious invention of Gottfried Leibniz, a German mathematician and philosopher who lived during the 17th century. The image portrays Leibniz's calculating machine, also known as the stepped reckoner, which he created around 1672. This groundbreaking device was truly ahead of its time, being the first-ever machine capable of performing complex mathematical operations such as division, multiplication, finding square roots, addition, and subtraction. The illustration featured in this print is taken from the first edition of Leibniz's Opera Omnia published in 1768. It beautifully captures the intricate design and technological marvel that this calculating machine represented during its era. With its gears and mechanisms meticulously arranged to perform various arithmetic functions effortlessly, it symbolizes both historical significance and scientific advancement. Leibniz's calculating machine revolutionized mathematics by automating calculations that were previously done manually or with less efficient tools. Its introduction marked a turning point in human history where technology began to play an increasingly vital role in advancing scientific knowledge. As we gaze upon this artwork today, we are reminded of how far we have come since Leibniz's time. Yet it also serves as a testament to his brilliance and innovation—an enduring tribute to one man's quest for progress through mathematical ingenuity.
