From 1557 his ceramics, decorated in coloured relief, made him famous. From 1575 to 1584 he lectured on natural history, physics and agriculture. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the remarkable Bernard Palissy, a renowned French potter whose talents extended far beyond his craft. Born in 1509, Palissy's artistic journey began as a glass-painter before he dedicated an impressive 16 years to perfecting enamels through countless experiments. It was from 1557 onwards that his ceramics adorned with vibrant relief decorations brought him widespread acclaim and recognition. However, Palissy's contributions were not limited to the realm of pottery. From 1575 to 1584, he captivated audiences with lectures on natural history, physics, and agriculture – demonstrating his insatiable curiosity and multidisciplinary approach to knowledge. A Huguenot Protestant during a time of religious turmoil in France, Palissy faced persecution for his beliefs under the Catholic regime. Tragically, he was arrested in 1588 and ultimately met his demise within prison walls the following year. The artwork itself is a testament to both Palissy's historical significance and the skillful craftsmanship of its creator. This colored engraving from the original edition of "Vies des Savants Illustres" published in 1875 beautifully captures Palissy's likeness while conveying elements of industrial innovation prevalent during the sixteenth century. Through this image, we are transported back in time – witnessing not only one man's extraordinary achievements but also gaining insight into an era marked by scientific exploration and cultural upheaval.
