Dopamine molecule

Dopamine molecule. Computer model of a molecule of the neurotransmitter and neurohormone dopamine. The atoms are represented as spheres and are colour-coded: carbon (red), hydrogen (white), oxygen (green) and nitrogen (orange). This is one of the most important of the neurotransmitters in the central nervous system (CNS). It plays a critical role in the way the brain controls movement. Underproduction of dopamine results in the movement disorder Parkinsons disease. Excess dopamine may contribute to psychotic illnesses, notably schizophrenia. Dopamine also acts as a hormone, inhibiting the release of the hormone prolactin, which stimulates and maintains lactation, from the pituitary gland

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a computer model of the dopamine molecule, a neurotransmitter and neurohormone that holds immense significance in our central nervous system. The intricate structure is beautifully represented with atoms depicted as color-coded spheres: carbon in red, hydrogen in white, oxygen in green, and nitrogen in orange. Dopamine plays a vital role in regulating movement within the brain, making it one of the most crucial neurotransmitters. Insufficient production of dopamine leads to Parkinson's disease—a debilitating movement disorder. Conversely, an excess of dopamine has been linked to psychotic illnesses like schizophrenia. Beyond its role as a neurotransmitter, dopamine also acts as a hormone by inhibiting the release of prolactin from the pituitary gland. Prolactin stimulates and sustains lactation—an essential process for nurturing newborns. This mesmerizing image not only highlights the structural intricacies but also emphasizes the profound impact that this single molecule can have on our physical and mental well-being. Its representation through computer artwork allows us to appreciate its complexity at a molecular level while acknowledging its critical functions within our bodies. Science Photo Library brings forth yet another remarkable piece capturing the essence of biochemistry and neuroscience through this stunning portrayal of dopamine—a true testament to their commitment towards scientific exploration and education.
