Diagram of comms satellites linked by lasers

Laser satellite communication. Artwork of the laser bridge concept for linking communications satellites in orbit. At present (1995), long- distance communication is achieved by bouncing signals back and forth between Earth and a number of satellites. The laser bridge idea is to send the message up to one satellite, then by infared laser beam along a chain of others. The signal is not sent back to Earth until it can go straight to the recipient. The laser system will allow a hundredfold increase in data transfer rates. And transfer will be secure since the laser signals are almost impossible to intercept. A military version of the system will go on trial from 1997

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a groundbreaking concept in satellite communication: the laser bridge. Created as an artwork, it depicts a diagram of communications satellites linked together by powerful lasers, revolutionizing long-distance communication in orbit. In 1995, the prevailing method involved bouncing signals between Earth and multiple satellites. However, the laser bridge idea proposes sending messages up to one satellite and then transmitting them along a chain of others using infrared laser beams. The signal would only be sent back to Earth when it can directly reach its intended recipient. This innovative system not only promises enhanced data transfer rates but also ensures unparalleled security since intercepting laser signals is nearly impossible. The potential impact of this technology extends beyond civilian applications; a military version of the system is set to undergo trials starting from 1997. With its ability to securely transmit vast amounts of information at unprecedented speeds, the laser bridge holds immense promise for various fields including science, astronomy, and astrophysics. As we gaze upon this mesmerizing illustration depicting celestial bodies forming around Alpha Lyrae (Vega), let us marvel at humanity's relentless pursuit of progress in unlocking the mysteries of our universe.
