Coloured SEM of the surface of human skin

Human skin. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the surface of healthy human skin. The scaly appearance is due to the dead outer cells being constantly shed (sloughed off) and replaced. This process is known as desquamation. Skin consists of an outer epidermis supported by an underlying dermis. It accounts for approximately 15% of the body weight of humans. The primary function of skin is to form a barrier between the internal organs and the outside world. It also helps regulate body temperature by releasing sweat and dilating or constricting blood vessels near the surface. Magnification: x988 at 5x7cm size. Magnification: x2, 400 at 5x7 inch size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the surface of healthy human skin. The intricate details reveal the scaly appearance, which is a result of the constant shedding and replacement of dead outer cells in a process known as desquamation. Skin, comprising an outer epidermis supported by an underlying dermis, plays a vital role in our bodies. Accounting for approximately 15% of our body weight, its primary function is to form a protective barrier between our internal organs and the outside world. Additionally, it aids in regulating body temperature through sweat release and dilation or constriction of blood vessels near the surface. Magnified at x988 for a 5x7cm size print and x2,400 for a 5x7 inch size print, this image offers us an up-close look at human skin on both macroscopic and microscopic levels. It highlights the complexity and beauty found within our own anatomy. The photo serves as a reminder that beneath what we see with our naked eye lies an extraordinary network of epithelial cells forming the epidermis – crucial components that make up human skin. This stunning visual representation provides valuable insights into subjects like dermatology, biology, and medical research. Captured by Science Photo Library's skilled photographers, this print invites viewers to appreciate not only their own skin but also the remarkable intricacies that exist within every part of their bodies.
