Cloud banks seen from space. Extensive banks of cloud are seen in this Space Shuttle photograph. Included here are deep cumulus clouds at bottom left, low-level stratus clouds right of centre and very white high-level cirrostratus clouds at far right. The dark area just below the Earths limb is part of the west coast of South America, with a bright patch of sunlight glinting off the Pacific Ocean. This photograph was taken by the crew of Shuttle Discovery during Mission STS-31 of 24-29 April 1990

Taken during Mission STS-31 in April 1990 by the crew of Shuttle Discovery, this image showcases an array of cloud banks that stretch across the frame. At the bottom left corner, deep cumulus clouds create a dramatic contrast with their dark and billowy formations. Towards the right of center, low-level stratus clouds add a touch of serenity to the composition.
