Bust of John Fuller, philanthropist

Marble bust of John Fuller (1757-1834), English philanthropist. Fuller was born at North Stoneham, Hampshire. At the age of four he lost his father, the local clergyman, and at ten was sent to Eton College. In 1777 Fullers uncle died, leaving him estates in Sussex and plantations in Jamaica. He stood for parliament in 1780 and was elected, representing Southampton until 1784 then Sussex from 1801 to 1812. His wealth allowed him to indulge in philanthropy. He was a supporter and sponsor of the Royal Institution in London, he once lent them £ 1000 (about £ 100, 000 in modern value) and never asked for it back. He endowed the Fullerian chairs in chemistry and physiology, built an observatory in his estate at Brightling in Sussex, paid for the first lifeboat at Eastbourne and paid for a lighthouse to be built at Beachy Head. Much admired by the public, he was popularly known as Mad Jack

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the majestic marble bust of John Fuller, an esteemed English philanthropist. Born in North Stoneham, Hampshire in 1757, Fuller's life was marked by tragedy as he lost his father at a tender age of four. However, his journey would take a remarkable turn when his uncle bequeathed him vast estates in Sussex and plantations in Jamaica upon his passing in 1777. Fuller's wealth enabled him to embark on a lifelong pursuit of benevolence and support for various causes. As a member of parliament representing Southampton from 1780 to 1784 and later Sussex from 1801 to 1812, he utilized his position to champion philanthropic endeavors that left an indelible mark on society. His generosity knew no bounds; he lent £1000 (equivalent to around £100,000 today) without ever seeking repayment to the renowned Royal Institution in London. Moreover, Fuller endowed the institution with the prestigious Fullerian chairs dedicated to chemistry and physiology. His contributions extended beyond academia as well – constructing an observatory within his Brightling estate in Sussex and funding Eastbourne's first lifeboat exemplify his commitment towards public safety. Affectionately known as "Mad Jack" due to both admiration and eccentricity among the public, John Fuller remains an emblematic figure whose legacy continues through these tangible symbols of progress and compassion. This mesmerizing photograph immortalizes not just a man but also serves as a testament to the power of philanthropy shaping our world for generations past and future.
