EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the lower jaw of a Deningeris bear, also known as Ursus deningeri, discovered alongside human fossils at Sima de los Huesos (Pit of Bones) in Sierra de Atapuerca, Spain. The significance of this find cannot be overstated, as it provides valuable evidence for understanding our evolutionary past. Excavations at Sima de los Huesos have yielded an astonishing number of more than 160 individual bear fossils to date. This archaeological site has been intermittently studied over the past century and has played a pivotal role in advancing our knowledge of human evolution. In recognition of its immense scientific value, Sierra de Atapuerca was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. This prestigious status underscores the importance of preserving and studying these remarkable remains. The fossilized mandible depicted here is not only a testament to the existence of these extinct bears but also offers insights into their morphology and behavior. It serves as a tangible link between ancient species that once roamed Europe's landscapes and modern humans who now inhabit this region. Through disciplines such as anthropology, paleontology, archaeology, and palaeoanthropology, researchers continue to unravel the mysteries surrounding Sima de los Huesos. Each bone fragment recovered contributes to our ever-evolving understanding of our shared history with other mammals that once thrived on Earth. This awe-inspiring photograph from Science Photo Library encapsulates both the beauty and scientific significance found within this single piece of bone – an enduring symbol connecting us to our distant past.
