Aurora borealis over observation domes in Canada

Aurora. Green aurora borealis (northern lights) display over illuminated domes. Aurorae are caused by charged particles from the Sun stimulating gas molecules in the Earths atmosphere to emit light. They are more common around the poles as the Earths magnetic field directs the charged particles there. They occur at an altitude of around 100 kilometres. These domes belong to the Aurora Domes Observatory in Churchill, Manitoba, Canada. They are used by tourists for the observation of the aurora. Photographed in March 1999
