Framed Print of Coal - Phurnacite Plant - Abercwmboi - Aberaman - 28th October 1988

Coal - Phurnacite Plant - Abercwmboi - Aberaman - 28th October 1988.
*CONDITIONS in a South Wales smokeless fuels plant where more than 1, 200 men worked were terrible according to a former worker who has developed serious ill health. Fred Richards, 78, from Miskin near Mountain Ash, worked at the Phurnacite plant in Abercwmboi, in the Cynon Valley, for more than 30 years. He is among a group litigation of 300 ex-workers who say they have developed cancers and respiratory diseases because of working there. Mr Richards suffered bladder cancer twice - once when a tumour was removed in October 2000, before another tumour was found and removed two years later. He also had surgery on bowel cancer in 2007 and has respiratory disability. Ex-workers claim British Coal failed to give them necessary protection and have launched a bid for compensation at Cardiffs High Court. Ronald Walker QC, for defendants the Department of Energy and the British Coal Board, said: The thrust of your evidence is wherever you worked the working conditions were very unpleasant. © Mirrorpix
