EDITORS COMMENTS
This early 20th century photograph captures the unique bond between a St. Bernard dog named Zoological Misfitz and its monk companion. The image, taken by renowned photographer Terry Parker, showcases the humanized qualities of these gentle giants, often referred to as the 'nuns' and 'monks' of the canine world. The St. Bernard, a breed known for its large size and distinctive shaggy coat, is dressed in a simple monk's habit, complete with a crook hook and a bottle, symbolizing the charitable work these dogs were historically known for. The monk, with a gentle expression and a hand on the dog's head, seems to be guiding and protecting his canine companion. The Zoological Misfitz series, a collection of photographs featuring various animals dressed in human clothing, gained popularity during this era for its whimsical and charming depictions of the human-animal connection. This photograph, in particular, highlights the idea of animals as companions and the role they can play in our lives, transcending the boundaries of species. The image not only showcases the playful nature of this photographic series but also emphasizes the deep connection between humans and animals, as well as the charitable work that animals, like the St. Bernard, have contributed throughout history. This photograph is a beautiful reminder of the unique companionship and bond that can exist between man and his best friend.
