EDITORS COMMENTS
Sir Rowland Hill (1795-1879): Pioneer of the Postal System Revolution This engraving portrows Sir Rowland Hill, a British teacher and postal reformer, born in 1795. Hill is best known for his groundbreaking contribution to history as the creator of the world's first adhesive postage stamp, the Penny Black, issued in Great Britain on May 1, 1840. Hill's innovative idea aimed to simplify and streamline the postal service, making it more accessible and affordable for the general public. Before the Penny Black, mail was delivered based on the weight and distance, which led to high costs and complex calculations. Hill's solution was a uniform rate for mail, regardless of the distance, which revolutionized the postal system and paved the way for modern postage stamps. Born in England, Hill was a prolific writer, publishing numerous works on education and postal reform. His passion for improving the postal service began in 1835 when he presented a report to the British government, proposing a unified postal system. After years of advocacy and persistence, his vision became a reality with the introduction of the Penny Black. This stunning colored engraving, published in the Universal History in 1892, captures the character and wisdom of this remarkable figure from the 19th century. Sir Rowland Hill's legacy continues to influence the postal services of Europe and beyond, making him an essential figure in the history of communication and social reform.
