The small town, nestled in the beautiful fjord of the same name in the northern part of the country, once served as the center of Iceland's herring fisheries. The herring, a small but abundant fish, played a significant role in the nation's economy and industry during the 1930s. In this image, barrels filled with herring are carefully loaded onto a boat at the harbor. The fish, freshly caught from the icy waters, were quickly processed and preserved in barrels to ensure their quality and longevity. The cooperage industry thrived in Siglufjordur as a result, with barrels being produced in large quantities to meet the demand.
