EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the bustling activity of Siglufjordur (Sigulufirdi), Iceland's former herring hub, in the late 1930s. The small town, nestled in the beautiful fjord of the same name in the northern part of the country, once served as the center of Iceland's herring fisheries. The herring, a small but abundant fish, played a significant role in the nation's economy and industry during the 1930s. In this image, barrels filled with herring are carefully loaded onto a boat at the harbor. The fish, freshly caught from the icy waters, were quickly processed and preserved in barrels to ensure their quality and longevity. The cooperage industry thrived in Siglufjordur as a result, with barrels being produced in large quantities to meet the demand. The town's population swelled during the herring season, as fishermen from all over Iceland and beyond came to take part in the lucrative fishery. The harbor was a hive of activity, with boats of all shapes and sizes coming and going, and the sound of fish being gutted and salted filled the air. Despite the harsh conditions, the people of Siglufjordur were resilient and resourceful, and the herring fishery provided them with a livelihood and a sense of community. This photograph is a testament to the importance of the herring fishery in Iceland's history and the role it played in shaping the country's economy and industry during the 1930s.
