EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, three pioneering figures of early aviation, Major Herbert George Brackley, Admiral Mark Kerr, and Major Tryggve Gran, are seen preparing for the first non-stop transatlantic flight in June 1919. The trio stands before a large biplane, its engine revved up and ready for takeoff. Major Brackley, a British Army officer and aviator, served as the pilot for the daring journey. Admiral Kerr, a Scottish naval officer, was the sponsor of the flight, providing crucial financial and logistical support. Major Gran, a Norwegian military officer and aviator, served as the navigator and radio operator. The successful completion of this non-stop transatlantic flight marked a significant milestone in aviation history. The feat was accomplished in the aircraft named "The Star of England," which was specially designed for the long-distance journey. The plane, a Vickers Vimy Type O, was equipped with extra fuel tanks and a long-range radio transmitter. The preparations for the flight were meticulous and intense. The team underwent rigorous training and testing, ensuring that they were well-equipped to face the challenges of the transatlantic crossing. The photograph captures the sense of determination and excitement as they stand before the plane, ready to embark on their historic journey. The successful completion of the non-stop transatlantic flight in 1919 paved the way for further advancements in aviation technology and opened up new possibilities for air travel. This photograph is a testament to the courage and ingenuity of these pioneering aviators and their groundbreaking achievement.
