EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite watercolor painting depicts Phoenicopterus ruber ruber, commonly known as the greater flamingo, created by the skilled hand of Sarah Stone in the late 18th century. The greater flamingo is the largest extant species within the Phoenicopteridae family, known for their distinctive long pink legs, curved beaks, and elegant, graceful appearance. Sarah Stone's captivating illustration showcases the intricate anatomy of this magnificent bird, with its long, slender neck extending from its body, and its hooked beak curved to perfection. The greater flamingo is native to Africa, the Americas, and parts of Europe, and can be found in various wetland habitats, such as lakes, lagoons, and shallow coastal areas. This beautiful work of art, now part of the Sir Ashton Lever collection, is a testament to the fascination and appreciation for the natural world that existed during the 18th century. The meticulous attention to detail and the vibrant use of color in this painting are a reflection of the dedication and passion of the artist and the collectors of her work. Jonathan Elphick, an English naturalist and ornithologist, was a contemporary of Sarah Stone, and his work on the classification of birds would have been influential during this period. The greater flamingo, Phoenicopterus ruber ruber, is also known as Phoenicopterus roseus or American flamingo, and belongs to the order Phoenicopteriformes, within the class Aves. This painting, along with Elphick's work, contributes to the rich history of ornithology and the documentation of the natural world.
