EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured steel engraving depicts the Tobacco plant, Nicotiana tabacum, also known as Tabac. The image, created by the skilled hands of Oudet after a botanical illustration by Edouard Maubert, is a beautiful example of the intricate detail and artistry that characterized botanical illustrations during the 19th century. The Tobacco plant is native to the Americas and was first introduced to Europe in the late 16th century. It has since become a globally cultivated crop, with numerous varieties used for the production of cigarettes, cigars, and other nicotine products. The engraving captures the plant in all its complexity, from the delicate veining of its leaves to the intricate structures of its flowers. The Tobacco plant is a herbaceous perennial, growing up to 2 meters tall, with large, glossy leaves that are characteristic of the plant. The flowers are bell-shaped and range in color from white to pink, with a distinctive five-lobed structure. The botanical illustration and engraving process was a labor-intensive one, requiring meticulous attention to detail and a deep understanding of the plant being depicted. The resulting images were not only scientifically accurate but also works of art, showcasing the beauty and intricacy of the natural world. This Tobacco plant engraving is a testament to the skill and artistry of its creators and a reminder of the rich botanical heritage of the past.
