EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a collection of Roman weapons and armour, each piece with its own rich history and significance in the ancient world. The Roman helmet (1) depicted here is one of the trophies of Marius, displayed on the Capitol Hill in Rome. Its elegant design, featuring a high, rounded profile and distinctive nasal guard, reflects the advanced military technology of the Roman Republic. The large, circular Roman shield (2) is inspired by the famous Column of Marcus Aurelius, which commemorates the emperor's military victories. The shield, adorned with intricate decorative patterns and a central boss, would have provided essential protection for Roman soldiers in battle. The Roman sword (3) displayed in this print is from the renowned Villa Borghese collection in Rome. Its sharp, curved blade and intricately designed hilt reflect the craftsmanship and attention to detail that characterized Roman weaponry. Lastly, the powerful battering ram (4) depicted in this print is reminiscent of the Trajan Column, another iconic Roman monument. This weapon, used to breach city walls and fortifications, symbolizes the military might and strategic prowess of the Roman legions. This stunning copperplate engraving, created by Pietro Ruga after an illustration by Lorenzo Rocceggiani, offers a glimpse into the rich history and military culture of ancient Rome. The meticulous attention to detail and the beautiful, intricate designs showcased in this print serve as a testament to the enduring fascination with the classical world.
