EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving, created by Dupre in 1851 for the Biblioteca Universal Ediciones Populares, showcases a significant moment in the life of King Louis XV of France (1710-1774), also known as Louis the Beloved. The scene depicts the monarch and his son, the Dauphin, during the Battle of Fontenoy in 1745, which was part of the larger War of the Austrian Succession in Europe. Louis XV, a prominent figure of the House of Bourbon, ruled France and Navarre during the modern age. His reign, marked by the opulence of the French court and the influence of the powerful cardinal Fleury, was also characterized by military conflicts, including the War of the Austrian Succession. The Battle of Fontenoy was a turning point in the war, with the French forces, led by the king himself, achieving a decisive victory over the Austrian and British forces. The engraving captures the intensity and drama of the battle, with Louis XV and the Dauphin, both on horseback, leading their troops into battle. The vibrant colors of the print add to the dynamic and engaging nature of the scene. This engraving is a testament to the rich historical significance of King Louis XV and the events of the 18th century. It offers a glimpse into the past, providing a visual representation of the personage and the times, making it an invaluable addition to any collection of historical art or European history.
