EDITORS COMMENTS
Major (Brevet Lt-Col) James John Hugonin of the 4th Light Dragoons is depicted in this stunning oil on canvas painting, created by the renowned artist James Canterbury Pardon around 1820. Hugonin, a distinguished military figure, joined the 4th Light Dragoons as a cornet in 1795 and was quickly promoted to lieutenant the same year. He continued to rise through the ranks, becoming a captain in 1803, major in 1811, and ultimately a brevet Lt-Col in 1819. During the Battle of Toulouse in 1814, Hugonin commanded the regiment in the absence of Lt-Col Dalbiac and received the Army Gold Medal for his bravery and leadership. After retiring from the regiment in 1821, Hugonin spent the remainder of his days at Nursted House near Petersfield, where he passed away on 30 January 1854. In this painting, Hugonin is shown with his black trumpeter and two troopers, with the regiment visible in the background. The regiment's red coats and white facings stand out against the lush green landscape, while the black trumpeter's contrasting attire adds a striking visual element to the scene. The painting captures the essence of the military life of the time, with its attention to detail and the sense of order and discipline that was a hallmark of the British Army during the Napoleonic Wars.
