EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a significant moment in London Fire Brigade history, as Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and His Royal Highness Prince Philip attended the GLC-LFB Centenary Royal Review at Lambeth Headquarters in 1966. The occasion marked the 100th anniversary of the London Fire Brigade, and the display paid homage to the past with a representation of 17th century Insurance Company firemen in action. The young firemen, aged between 16 and 18, took on the roles of their historical counterparts, adding authenticity to the scene. Early firefighting equipment, including old pumps and hoses, were used for the demonstration, transporting us back in time. The smoky atmosphere and the use of old-fashioned gear created a nostalgic and heritage-rich experience. The insurance firemen, dressed in period costumes, were shown engaging in hand-to-hand firefighting techniques, while the Great Pumps were demonstrated with great precision. The water jets sent plumes of water into the air, adding to the visual spectacle. This event not only celebrated the London Fire Brigade's centenary but also showcased the evolution of firefighting techniques over the decades. The 1960s, with its distinct fashion and smoky atmosphere, was brought to life through this meticulously planned display. The Centenary Royal Review at Lambeth Headquarters was a testament to the rich history of the London Fire Brigade and a reminder of the bravery and dedication of the firefighters who have served the city for over a century.
