EDITORS COMMENTS
This woodblock print showcases a scene from a traditional Kyogen performance of Tsurigitsune, or The Fox and the Trapper, in Japan between 1870 and 1890. Kyogen is a classical form of Japanese comedy theater that originated in the 13th century, featuring short plays with a strong emphasis on physical comedy and exaggerated expressions. In this particular scene, the cunning fox, depicted with a sly expression and bushy red tail, is shown in the foreground, cautiously examining the bait set by the trapper, who is hidden off-stage. The trapper, with a determined look on his face, extends an arm from behind a tree, attempting to coax the fox closer to the trap with a piece of bait. The intricate details of the woodblock print, from the textured bark of the tree to the intricate patterns on the fox's fur, bring the scene to life and transport the viewer to the world of Kyogen theater. The use of bold lines, vibrant colors, and dynamic composition add to the energy and excitement of the performance, while the traditional Japanese setting and costumes further emphasize the cultural significance of this art form. This woodblock print is a beautiful and unique window into the rich history of Japanese theater, offering a glimpse into the world of Tsurigitsune and the timeless struggle between the wit of the fox and the cunning of the trapper.
