EDITORS COMMENTS
This postcard image transports us back in time to the Kabyle Region of Algeria during the 1910s, where an olive oil press is in full operation. The Kabyle people, indigenous Berbers from North Eastern Algeria with an estimated population of 5 million today, have preserved this ancient method of olive oil production for centuries. The industrial scene unfolds before us: large, heavy stones are skillfully maneuvered to crush olives, releasing their precious oil. The olives are then transferred to a large, round vat, where they are trodden by bare feet or trampled by animals. The resulting paste is then transferred to a pressing bed, where a twisting thread or screw press is used to extract the oil. Buckets are placed beneath the press to collect the golden liquid. The intricate process of olive oil production in the Kabyle Region is a testament to the resilience and ingenuity of the people. This method of production, which has remained unchanged for generations, is a fascinating glimpse into the region's rich history and cultural heritage. The industrial yet rustic setting showcases the perfect harmony between traditional techniques and the natural beauty of the land. The Kabyle olive oil press stands as a symbol of the region's proud Berber identity and the enduring connection between the people and their land. This postcard, with its incredible detail, offers a unique and captivating window into the past, inviting us to appreciate the simple yet profound beauty of this ancient process.
