EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative poster, titled "Helft uns siegen! Zeichnet die Kriegsanleihe" (Help us triumph! Subscribe to the War Loan), dates back to 1917 during the height of World War I. The image features a German soldier, his face etched with the weight of war, gazing off into the distance with a determined expression. Hanging from his neck is a gas mask, a grim reminder of the harsh realities of the battlefield. The text above the soldier's head urges viewers to "Help us triumph!" and to "Subscribe to the War Loan." The War Loan, also known as Kriegsanleihe in German, was a government bond issued by the German Empire during World War I to finance military expenses. The poster was part of a larger propaganda campaign aimed at encouraging citizens to invest in the war effort by purchasing these bonds. The use of a soldier as the central figure in the poster was a common tactic employed by governments during wartime to rally support and patriotism among their populations. The poster's design is striking and powerful, with the soldier's intense gaze drawing the viewer in and the bold, red text demanding action. The use of the gas mask adds an element of danger and urgency, emphasizing the need for financial support to ensure the safety and success of the German military. Overall, this poster is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during wartime and the role that individual actions, such as investing in war bonds, can play in shaping the outcome of a conflict.
