The Grenadier Guards, an elite infantry regiment of the British Army, are seen here in their distinctive bearskin hats and scarlet uniforms, forming up in the square before setting off on their arduous journey. The date is February, and the chill of the winter air is evident in the frozen ground and the breath visible in the air. The Crimean War, which lasted from 1853 to 1856, was a significant event in British and European history.
