EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the intense and perilous atmosphere of the Gallipoli trenches during the First World War. The image features Lieutenant C.H. Parkes of the Royal Navy Division, intently focused through the lens of a Periscope Rifle, also known as a Sniperscope, in the 1st ANZAC Corps sector. The Dardanelles Campaign, which began in April 1915, was a major military operation aimed at securing a sea route to Russia through the Bosphorus and the Black Sea. The Gallipoli Peninsula, located in modern-day Turkey, became the site of a brutal and protracted stalemate between Allied and Ottoman forces. The use of Periscope Rifles, such as the one held by Lieutenant Parkes, was a significant innovation in trench warfare. These devices allowed soldiers to observe enemy positions from a safe distance, enabling them to accurately target and eliminate enemy snipers and officers. The presence of the Royal Navy Division at Gallipoli underscores the multifaceted nature of the campaign, which involved not only ground troops but also naval forces. This photograph offers a poignant glimpse into the harsh realities of trench warfare during the Great War. The determined expression on Lieutenant Parkes' face, the worn and muddy uniform, and the desolate landscape in the background all serve to underscore the immense sacrifices made by soldiers on both sides during this pivotal moment in world history.
