EDITORS COMMENTS
Amidst the turbulent waters of the North Sea, a humorous depiction of England's coastal towns gearing up for the imminent threat of enemy attack during World War I. In this 1915 illustration from the Illustrated London News, Bexhill, Blackpool, Bognor, Clacton, Southend, and Ifracombe are playfully fortified against the looming danger. The seaside towns, known for their tranquil beaches and holiday attractions, have transformed into formidable strongholds. Bexhill's grand pier becomes a defensive fortress, while Blackpool's famous tower is topped with a cannon. Bognor Regis' pier is adorned with machine gun nests, and Clacton's pier is converted into a lookout post. Southend's pier, the longest in the world at the time, is a veritable fortress, with soldiers manning the ramparts and artillery positioned at strategic points. Ifracombe's harbour, once a haven for fishing boats, now houses a fleet of naval vessels. These humorous illustrations served as a reminder to the enemy that the British coast was not an easy target. The towns' residents, in their determination to protect their homes, transformed their beloved seaside destinations into formidable fortresses. The spirit of the home front was alive and well, even in the face of war. This print, a fascinating glimpse into the past, offers a lighthearted perspective on the realities of wartime England. The towns may have been humourously fortified, but the resolve of the British people was as strong as ever.
