EDITORS COMMENTS
The Ghent Altarpiece, also known as the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb, is a seminal work of Flemish art created between 1425 and 1432 by the Van Eyck brothers, Jan van Eyck (1390-1441) and Hubert van Eyck (1370-1426). This masterpiece, housed in Saint Bavo Cathedral in Ghent, Belgium, is renowned for its innovative use of oil on wood technique and its intricate detail. The upper half of the central panel of this triptych depicts the Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ. Mary is shown in three-quarter view, gazing down at the Adoration scene below. Her serene expression and delicate features are rendered with exquisite detail, showcasing the Van Eycks' mastery of oil painting. Her dress, adorned with intricate patterns and rich fabrics, is rendered with such realism that it appears almost tactile. The use of chiaroscuro, or the play of light and shadow, adds depth and dimension to the figure. The Ghent Altarpiece is considered a pinnacle of Northern European art, and its influence can be seen in the development of the Renaissance. The intricate detail and lifelike representation of the figures, as well as the use of oil on wood, set a new standard for artistic technique and innovation. This print captures the essence of the Virgin Mary's figure from the central panel, offering a glimpse into the beauty and intricacy of this masterpiece.
